As I prepare to preach at this year’s District Conference, I have been delving deeply into the Book of First Corinthians. Out of the numerous commentaries I have consulted, two that I have found particularly helpful and insightful are: First Corinthians (in the Belief: A Theological Commentary on the Bible series) by Charles Campbell (2018, Westminster John Knox Press) and Paul for Everyone: 1 Corinthians by Tom Wright (2004, Westminster John Knox Press).
These two scholars have different opinions on the issue of LGBTQ inclusion, but their passion for scripture study, discovery, and interpretation allows them to find much the same mind on many foundational matters. This too gives me hope for our present challenges.

Another book that I hope to refer to at the District Conference, which I recommended earlier, and am glad to recommend again for those who have not yet read it is The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion by Jonathan Haidt (2012, Vintage Books).
